Huka Lodge: The Green Scene

The 2025 reopening of the 22-room Huka Lodge after a year-long refurbishment marked an eco-luxe watershed on  New Zealand's North Island. A push to rewild the 17-acre, Waikato River-side grounds surrounding the lodge – which was founded in 1924 as a rustic fishing camp – means native plants and animals once again flourish in the lush retreat. Tuis and fantails trill from the canopy, signaling the benefits of using chemical-free pest control, while queen bees take flight from the on-site pollinator breeding garden.

The conservation-minded ethos pays off for travelers angling for rainbow trout in the property’s crystal-clear pools or just savoring the atmosphere around the lodge cottages. Those looking to venture farther afield can cruise Lake Taupo or hike Silica Rapids, two exemplars of New Zealand’s extraordinary natural beauty. Organic ingredients from local producers extend environmentally mindful practices to the table: Elegant lodge dinners feature salmon raised in Mount Cook’s alpine lakes, line-caught snapper, and South Island wagyu beef. Most wines in the lodge’s 4,500-bottle cellar come from New Zealand growers, including selections from the family-owned Craggy Range winery, which guests can visit by private helicopter.

Anantara Stanley & Livingstone Victoria Falls Hotel: The Conservation Connection

Encounters with endangered black rhinos at Victoria Falls Private Game Reserve showcase Zimbabwe’s enduring allure, and the 16-room Anantara Stanley & Livingstone Victoria Falls Hotel supports the critical species through its conservation-focused experiences.

A portion of funds from game drives and guest stays goes to wildlife projects, including the daily work of an on-site bush-guardian team that monitors resident rhinos. Travelers seeking hands-on conservation experiences can opt for volunteer outings with Anantara’s partner, Nakavango Conservation Programme, with activities ranging from habitat rehabilitation to wildlife tracking.

The environmental philosophy extends to the solar power fueling the property and the elimination of single-use plastic. Food scraps composted on-site enrich a vegetable garden that supplies 70 percent of the produce used by the hotel’s farm-to-table restaurant. Meanwhile, investments in local projects – such as financial management and marketing workshops for local farmers – build community resilience.

One&Only Moonlight Basin: The Wild Retreat

Linked to Big Sky Resort by a private gondola, the 92-room One&Only Moonlight Basin, which opened in November, offers intimate wilderness access – starting with its own 240-acre property. Some 60 percent of the mountainside land will be kept as open space in perpetuity, protecting vital wildlife corridors leading into the vast, 17,000-acre forest. On the rest, trails lead to a hidden whiskey speakeasy and a private observatory for guided stargazing sessions.

Rewilding efforts lay the groundwork for future adventures: The resort is reforesting portions of the property and restocking its alpine lakes with native cutthroat trout. Architecture firm Olson Kundig has extended the philosophy to interior spaces, where natural materials including white oak and granite echo the palette of the nearby Spanish Peaks. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame mountain views, which are complemented by paintings and sculptures by Montana artists.
